What is a Hybrid Golf Club and How Can it Help My Game

Golfers are often looking for that extra edge. Whether it's extra practice or investing in new equipment the modern player is always seeking more accuracy and distance. New golfers often ask us what a hybrid golf club is and why they may want one. Before getting into the nitty-gritty of explaining this type of club, remember that there is no substitute for practice. Just because you buy the latest golf clubs, they are going to be pretty useless if you don't learn how to grip properly and work on perfecting your swing to get the basics right.

So What is a Hybrid Golf Club?

This type of club was introduced in 2007 by golf manufacturer TaylorMade. TaylorMade created what can best be described as a cross between a fairway wood and an iron. They called this a rescue club and still market it as such today. Most, if not all, golf manufacturers have designed and created their own version of a rescue club and most are called hybrid golf clubs. A hybrid golf club is now seen as an important (if not essential) club among the 14 clubs permitted. Hybrids are seen as a useful and multi-purpose golf club. An amateur will probably want to use this club when they are still a long way from the green, perhaps over 170 yards.

I've mentioned on some other posts how I struggle to be consistent with long irons. I often find using a 3 iron difficult to master, in fact, I'd go as far to say I try my best to avoid using them, even though I practice my long iron play. Hybrids are designed in such a way that most of the weight is placed to the rear of the club head. They have an 18 to 24-degree loft on the face which means that the average golfer can strike the ball sufficiently to get both distance and loft, something which is incredibly hard to do with long irons.

Do the Pros use hybrid golf clubs?

It's a common myth that hybrid golf clubs are only used by ladies and older players. It's true that the hybrid is extremely useful to players who are unable to hit the ball long distances, however the versatility of hybrid clubs mean the pros have gotten in on the act.

Jordan Spieth for example carries a Titleist H1 Hybrid. Titleist hybrids are an exceptional club and the 818 series have really made them easy to hit.

Not only do they look incredible they have been created using some innovative and state of the art technology.

Perfect for distance & loft. A superb alternative to a long iron

There are two Titleist Hybrids in this series. The H1 and H2. Available in both right and left hand the Titleist 818 H1 hybrid offers lofts of 19, 21, 23, 25 and 27 degrees. Built with ultimate precision the H1 will offer distance with a high launch. The H2 offers iron-like control and is offered in 19, 21 and 23-degree lofts.

The 818 Titleist hybrids have been created with their Active Recoil Channelâ„¢ 2.0 technology which is billed to generate faster ball speeds through an improved channel and flexing polymer insert. This means the ball will carry longer distances; perfect for those long par 5s. The answer to what is a hybrid golf club is simple, it's more than just a rescue club, it's a fantastic alternative to long irons and will only help with your score.
