Which golf tees should I use? (and how high to tee the ball)

Golf tees are about as basic as gear gets—but they have a bigger impact on your shots than most people think. The right tee height and a consistent style of tee can help you launch your driver better, make fairway woods less scary, and stop snapping tees every swing.

On this page we’ll cover tee length, material, and height for drivers, woods, and irons, and show highly rated golf tees from Amazon so you can stock up on options that actually make sense for your game.

Golf tee basics: length, material & head shape

Tees look simple, but three main things matter when you’re choosing which ones to use:

Length

  • Short (1 1/2" – 2 1/8"): Great for irons, hybrids, and fairway woods off the tee.
  • Standard (2 3/4"): Most common size—works for both drivers and fairway woods.
  • Long (3 1/4" – 4"): Ideal for modern, large-headed drivers if you like the ball teed high.

Material

  • Wood: Cheap, traditional, biodegradable; breaks more often, which some golfers like (less turf damage).
  • Plastic: Durable, often lower friction; can last many rounds but not as eco-friendly if you leave them behind.
  • Composite: Mix of materials; often marketed as “performance” tees with reduced friction heads.

Head style

  • Standard cup: Simple, works with any club.
  • Shallow/low-friction cup: Less contact with the ball; some claim tiny distance gains.
  • Step/“castle” tees: Built-in step sets the same height every time.

How high should you tee the ball?

The right tee height depends on the club you’re hitting and the shape of shot you want. Here’s a simple starting point you can tweak based on your swing:

Club Suggested tee length Ball height at address Why it works
Driver 2 3/4" or 3 1/4" About half the ball above the top of the driver face Encourages an upward strike for higher launch and lower spin.
3-wood / 5-wood 2 1/8" – 2 3/4" Ball’s equator roughly level with top of the clubface Promotes a slightly sweeping strike without sky-balls.
Hybrid 1 1/2" – 2 1/8" Ball just slightly above the turf Feels similar to a fairway lie but offers a touch of forgiveness.
Irons 1 1/2" – 2 1/8" Ball barely above the grass, almost like a perfect lie Makes it easier to hit down and through the ball for crisp contact.

Use these as guidelines, then adjust based on your tendencies. If you’re always skying driver, tee it a touch lower. If you’re always hitting it low, you may need the ball a bit higher.

How to choose the right tees for your game

You don’t need a PhD in tee technology. Just pick a small mix that covers your normal shots and is easy to use:

  1. Pick a go-to driver tee. For most golfers, a 2 3/4" or 3 1/4" tee works well with modern drivers. If your driver head is large and you like the ball high, lean toward 3 1/4".
  2. Add a shorter tee for irons and hybrids. A 1 1/2"–2 1/8" tee makes it easier to hit controlled shots with irons and hybrids off the tee without feeling like the ball is perched on a toothpick.
  3. Decide on wood vs plastic. If you hate breaking tees, grab plastic or composite. If you prefer the feel and look of classic tees and don’t mind snapping a few, wood is perfectly fine.
  4. Consider step tees if you want consistency. If you struggle to tee the ball at the same height every time, step tees give you a repeatable setup—especially helpful with the driver.
  5. Choose a color you can actually see. Bright or neon tees are easier to spot and reuse. If you walk and hate bending over hunting for tees, this matters more than you’d think.

Once you settle on a combo that works, buy in bulk and keep a stash in your bag—that’s one less thing to think about when you’re trying to lower your average golf score.

Golf tee FAQ

Do “low-friction” or “performance” tees really add distance?

Some tests show a tiny difference in ball speed or spin, but for most golfers the gains are very small compared to swing changes or a better strike. If they give you confidence and you like how they feel, great—just don’t expect 20 extra yards just from changing tees.

Is it okay to use broken tees for iron shots?

Absolutely. Many players use broken driver tees for iron shots. As long as the ball is stable and the tee isn’t ridiculously short, you’re fine.

How many tees should I carry?

A handful of driver-length tees and a few shorter tees will get most golfers through several rounds. If you like wood tees and snap a lot, keep 20–30 in your bag so you’re never short.

Can I use the same tee for every club?

You can, but it’s not ideal. It’s usually easier to have at least two lengths so you’re not trying to guess the right height with the same tee for both driver and irons. Still, if you only want one size, a 2 3/4" tee is a versatile middle-ground choice.
